The minutes of the September 29, 2001 meeting were reviewed. No corrections. The next meeting is scheduled for May 18, 2002.
Center for the Revitalization of Urban Education (CRUE).
Dick Slagter was unable to attend the meeting but will be reporting out on CRUE on its possible application in the Northern Zone at a later date. Dick and Arch Lewis attended the CRUE training last year as Northern Zone staff representatives. Dick had previously indicated that CRUE is being utilized in a Gaylord Headstart program and potentially in Muskegon Heights. Essentially the program involves community outreach and communications processing for systemic change. Dick had requested that a discussion of CRUE be considered for the zone retreat in May to familiarize staff with the program.

Budget Recommendation:
It was determined to recommend that Coordinating Councils continue to contribute or maintain a $200/year line for local costs in support of the Future Search program and activities. Chuck will send a letter to staff and council chairs requesting the yearly commitment of $200 per council.
Committee Reports
Great Lakes Center – no report.
MABO Summit
Brad Richards reported the next summit is scheduled for January 31, 2002 in Dearborn. Participation in the summit remains high and coordination/information sharing in the zone is improving. Brad reminded everyone that he is still gathering new member materials for bargaining proposals.
Community/Public Relations
Bill Kuiper reported for Bonita Harvey. The committee will be meeting to develop an information commercial that will be generic in nature; so adaptable around the zone. Region 17 is working on an area theme this year and coordinating efforts with local leaders. Brad reported that his council has expanded their cable TV promotional work. Yearly cost is now approximately $2,000. Brad will send Tom a tape that will be distributed to all zone Uniserv offices for possible review and use.
Technology
Chuck Herring reported that the committee will meet only twice a year as the zone website has been completed. Jim Neff will continue to act as the site technician. The zone data base project is on hold until the MEA membership project is assessed. Initially the committee has experienced problems in coordinating data.
Kash for Kids
Several reports of submitted checks not being cashed timely were noted. Christina Canfield will be at the Dearborn staff meeting to update the staff and leaders. Overall, contributions are up and PAC campaigns around the zone have been going well. Staff, leaders, PAC Snaps, and members are commended for their continuing efforts.
Union Mentoring
It was reported that the grant to 18-A for development and piloting new member materials was completed. The materials/kits need to be made available to the other Uniserv Offices. Denis Skoglund will be contacted so copies can be reproduced for distribution.
Professional Development
The "new member focus group" study was discussed by the Design Team with the understanding that the committee will meet soon to develop objectives/strategy for promoting a zone-wide plan.
Future Search 2002 and 2003
The Design Team reviewed the minutes of September 2001.
The following items were agreed upon:

The Design Team will "report out" at the Summer Leadership Conference highlighting the first two Future Search events and what has transpired since (noting accomplishments, goals and objectives). Tom Taylor will ask committee chairs to prepare a report for distribution this summer.·
A new Future Search Design Team planning group will be recommended to work on Future Search 2003.·
MEA-Retired representative will be added to the zone design team as soon as possible.·
It was reiterated that the zone design team would consist of ASO, PSA, MEA-Retired, ESP, EA, HE (Board Members), Management, and Committee Chairs. Committee representatives will change as committees are established and/or discontinued.The next Design Team meeting will be May 18, 2002 in Mackinaw City.
