SUMMER HERE?
This is the last issue of the Eastsider for the year. Usually I’m sitting in the office with the air conditioner on while writing up the last issue. Today, I sit in a short-sleeve shirt with the heat jacked up to 70
°. The outside temperature is 46° with rain and clouds looking like it could change to snow at any time. I thought I ridded myself of this weather when I left the Soo!While on the subject of weather—there are storm clouds rising from the Lansing area. Seems the legislature still wants to play with our benefits. MEA has been sending messages to all about the House and Senate insurance bills as has your leadership.
I want each of you to know this will not go away over the summer. In fact, it was planned to be acted upon while we were on summer break. Now why would the legislature do this? Simple—out of sight—out of mind. The intent is to release these evil bills from committee and have them acted upon prior to our return to school. The legislature knows the MEA has the ability to mobilize its membership very quickly. So to alleviate the problem, the legislature simply takes action while we are recuperating from another year of helping educate Michigan’s youth.
So, it is important that everyone inform the designated union leadership should they be out of town or just somewhere other than their normal listed address/phone number. We must maintain vigilance over this legislature to keep them honest.
If a call, note or email has not been sent to your legislator, now is the time to do it! And, again in June and again in July and again in August.
Our legislators don’t want to fix our problem by funding the schools adequately, instead they find it a lot easier to cut our benefits which does nothing to stop the problem (lack of $ for the public schools).
Funny, I don’t hear anyone suggesting the legislators give up their fringe benefits to help fund public education. After all, every little bit helps!

K-16 Rally & March on the Capitol will be June 21 in Lansing. We have money to send cars, buses, boats, trains or planes—just kidding about the boats, trains and planes. Seriously, the administrators,
boards and parent groups are behind us on this (new concept). If there are enough people going down to charter a bus—we will. Otherwise, we can pick up round trip mileage for autos carrying four people. Look to your Coordinating Council rep for details.
HAVE A GRRREAT SUMMER!!
